North Node and South Node in Your Birth Chart
Two points, one axis. What comes naturally to you, and the direction that tends to bring the most growth. Find your nodes below, then read both ends of your axis.
Find my North NodeWhat the Lunar Nodes actually are
The Lunar Nodes aren't planets or objects at all. They're two points in space. The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees against the path the Sun appears to travel through the year (the ecliptic), so twice a month the Moon crosses that path: once heading north, once heading south. Those two crossing points are the North Node and the South Node. They always sit exactly opposite each other, which is why astrologers read them as one axis rather than two separate placements. If your North Node is in Gemini, your South Node is in Sagittarius, every time.
How astrology reads the axis
In the astrological tradition, the South Node describes what comes easily, the skills and habits you seem to arrive with, and the North Node describes what you're here to grow toward, the less familiar direction that tends to bring the most satisfaction over a lifetime. Some astrologers frame the South Node as past-life memory; others keep it simpler and read it as the comfort zone you built early. Either way the idea is the same. The South Node isn't bad and the North Node isn't a chore. One is the home you can always go back to, the other is the road out of town.
Two common misreadings. First, the North Node is not a prize you win by abandoning your South Node. The gifts on the south side are real, and the growth usually comes from carrying them north rather than throwing them away. Second, the North Node doesn't promise ease. It tends to feel awkward precisely because it's new. In Vedic astrology the same two points are called Rahu (north) and Ketu (south) and carry their own, rather different, interpretive tradition; this page follows the Western, growth-oriented reading.
Find your North Node and South Node
The nodes change sign about every 18 to 19 months, so your birth date usually settles the sign. A birth time and place adds the houses. Enter your details:
The South Node: what you already know
The South Node gets less attention than its partner, but it's half the story and usually the easier half to recognise. Its sign describes a style that feels like second nature: the way you cope under pressure, the role you slip into in a group, the skills people assume you were born with. Its house shows the part of life where you tend to over-invest because it feels safe.
Astrologers who work with reincarnation read the South Node as what a soul brings in from earlier lives. Others read it developmentally, as the strategy you built in childhood. You don't need to settle that question to use it. Notice the South Node pattern as a resource, and also as the place you retreat to when the North Node work gets uncomfortable. The healthiest version of the axis is not north instead of south, but south gifts put to work in a north direction.
Your South Node is always in the sign opposite your North Node. Every reading below covers both ends: switch between them on any card.
The nodal axis through the 12 signs
Each card is named for the North Node sign, with the South Node in the opposite sign. Read the familiar end first, then the growing edge.
North Node in Aries, South Node in Libra
From keeping the peace to knowing what you want.
You arrived fluent in other people. You can read a room, sense what a partner needs before they say it, and find the compromise that keeps everyone comfortable. The catch is that your own preferences often go unspoken for so long that you lose track of them. Decisions wait for someone else's opinion. Relationships can become the place you disappear into, pleasant on the surface and quietly airless underneath.
The Aries North Node asks for a self that exists before the negotiation starts. That means acting on a want without polling first, tolerating the small discomfort of someone being briefly displeased, and discovering that most people respect a clear 'I'd like this' more than endless accommodation. Your Libra grace doesn't vanish. It becomes the way you assert yourself, kindly but plainly.
Small ways to lean north:
- Order first at dinner, without asking what everyone else is getting.
- Start one thing alone this year that nobody asked you to start.
- Notice when 'I don't mind' is true and when it's a habit.

North Node in Taurus, South Node in Scorpio
From living in the intensity to building something steady.
Crisis feels like home turf. You know how to go deep, read hidden motives, and stay calm in the middle of other people's storms. You may be drawn to merged finances, all-or-nothing bonds, and situations where a lot is at stake. The cost is a nervous system that rarely gets to rest, and a suspicion that a quiet, ordinary week means something is about to go wrong.
Taurus asks you to trust simplicity. Your own money, your own body, a routine that holds. The growth is learning that a life can be good without being dramatic, and that you're allowed to enjoy things without first earning them through suffering. The Scorpio depth stays with you, but it gets a sturdier floor to stand on.
Small ways to lean north:
- Keep one account or savings goal that is entirely yours.
- Let a pleasant day be pleasant, without scanning it for threats.
- Use your hands: cooking, gardening, building, mending.
Mean North Node in Taurus, 1950 to 2030: Feb 1966 to Sep 1967 · Oct 1984 to Apr 1986 · May 2003 to Nov 2004 · Dec 2021 to Jul 2023
North Node in Gemini, South Node in Sagittarius
From having the answer to asking the next question.
You arrive with conviction. Big-picture thinking, a philosophy or faith that explains things, a pull toward travel and grand plans. You're often the one who knows what it all means. The trap is certainty: deciding before listening, preaching where a conversation was wanted, and skipping the small details because the vision feels more important.
Gemini asks for curiosity over conclusions. Learn the local, the specific, the person in front of you. Ask follow-up questions and mean them. Read things you disagree with. Growth comes through ordinary exchanges: siblings, neighbours, the daily back and forth of messages. Your Sagittarian sense of meaning becomes richer once it's built from real data instead of a single big idea.
Small ways to lean north:
- In a disagreement, ask two genuine questions before stating a view.
- Learn a practical skill in small, unglamorous steps.
- Write things down; let your thinking be revised in public.

North Node in Cancer, South Node in Capricorn
From holding it all together to letting yourself be held.
Competence came early. You may have been the responsible child, the one who handled things, and you're good at structure, ambition, and keeping your feelings filed neatly away until the work is done. Status and achievement can become the measure of whether you're okay. The risk is a life that looks impressive and feels lonely from the inside.
Cancer points toward home, family (chosen or given), and feelings spoken out loud. The growth is allowing needs, admitting tiredness, and caring for people in ways that can't be put on a résumé. Your Capricorn skill doesn't go to waste. It becomes the strong frame around a warm and lived-in private life.
Small ways to lean north:
- Say 'I need help with this' before you're at the end of your rope.
- Make your home a place you actually like being, not just sleep in.
- Protect one evening a week that has nothing to do with work.
Mean North Node in Cancer, 1950 to 2030: Jan 1963 to Aug 1964 · Aug 1981 to Mar 1983 · Apr 2000 to Oct 2001 · Nov 2018 to Jun 2020
North Node in Leo, South Node in Aquarius
From blending into the group to stepping into the light.
You're comfortable as part of a collective: friend groups, causes, online communities, the team. You think in terms of systems and fairness, and you can feel faintly embarrassed by anything that looks like self-promotion. Detachment is your safe place. The cost is that your own heart, your particular creative voice, stays hidden behind 'we'.
Leo asks to be seen as an individual, and to enjoy it. Creative work with your name on it, play, romance, generosity that comes from warmth rather than principle. The growth is learning that wanting recognition isn't vanity. Your Aquarian ideals land far better when there's a real, visible person standing behind them.
Small ways to lean north:
- Share something you made, with your name on it.
- Accept a compliment with a plain thank you.
- Make time for play that has no purpose at all.
Mean North Node in Leo, 1950 to 2030: Jun 1961 to Jan 1963 · Feb 1980 to Aug 1981 · Sep 1998 to Apr 2000 · Apr 2017 to Nov 2018
North Node in Virgo, South Node in Pisces
From drifting with the tide to tending the daily work.
You arrive deeply intuitive, compassionate, and porous. You feel the mood of a place, you may have a strong spiritual or artistic pull, and you can lose hours in imagination. The difficulty is boundaries and follow-through. Days blur, plans dissolve, and it's easy to rescue others while your own life quietly goes untended.
Virgo brings you down to earth in the best way. Routines, health, useful work, finishing what you start. The growth is discovering that structure doesn't kill the magic, it gives it somewhere to live. Service still matters to you, but now it has a shape and an end, so it doesn't drain you dry.
Small ways to lean north:
- Keep one small daily ritual for a month: a walk, a list, a stretch.
- Help in a specific, bounded way rather than an open-ended one.
- Finish a creative project rather than starting the next.
Mean North Node in Virgo, 1950 to 2030: Dec 1959 to Jun 1961 · Jul 1978 to Feb 1980 · Feb 1997 to Sep 1998 · Oct 2015 to Apr 2017
North Node in Libra, South Node in Aries
From going it alone to building something together.
Independence is second nature. You're quick, brave, and used to trusting your own instincts, often because early life taught you that you'd have to. You can start anything. The pattern is impatience with other people's pace, a reflex to fight first, and a lonely habit of doing everything yourself because asking feels slower.
Libra is the art of partnership: listening, collaborating, weighing another view, and letting a relationship change you a little. The growth is discovering that cooperation isn't weakness and that some things can only be built by two. Your Aries courage stays. It becomes the nerve to be honest inside a relationship rather than leave it.
Small ways to lean north:
- Before deciding something that affects someone, ask their view first.
- Let a partner or colleague lead one project fully.
- Practise the pause between a reaction and a response.
Mean North Node in Libra, 1950 to 2030: May 1958 to Dec 1959 · Dec 1976 to Jul 1978 · Aug 1995 to Feb 1997 · Mar 2014 to Oct 2015
North Node in Scorpio, South Node in Taurus
From holding on tight to letting life transform you.
Steadiness is your gift. You're loyal, patient, good with material things and physical comfort, and you know how to build security. The trouble starts when security turns into stuckness: staying in a job, relationship, or belief long after it has stopped growing, because change feels like loss.
Scorpio asks you to go deeper and to let go. Real intimacy, shared resources, honest conversations about the uncomfortable things, and the willingness to let an old version of your life end. The growth is learning that what you release often comes back in a better form. Your Taurus groundedness is what makes that depth survivable.
Small ways to lean north:
- Clear out one thing you're keeping only out of habit.
- Have the conversation you've been postponing.
- Let someone else see your finances, fears, or plans in full.
Mean North Node in Scorpio, 1950 to 2030: Oct 1956 to May 1958 · Jun 1975 to Dec 1976 · Jan 1994 to Aug 1995 · Sep 2012 to Mar 2014
North Node in Sagittarius, South Node in Gemini
From collecting information to finding what you believe.
You arrive clever and adaptable. You know a little about everything, you can talk to anyone, and you're quick to see both sides. The pattern is scatter: tabs open, opinions borrowed, plans changed with the latest article. You may know many facts about a subject without ever deciding what you think about it.
Sagittarius asks for meaning and commitment to a view. Long journeys, deep study, a philosophy you've tested against life, and the courage to say 'this is what I believe' even when you can still argue the other side. Your Gemini agility doesn't disappear. It becomes the open mind that keeps your convictions honest.
Small ways to lean north:
- Pick one subject and go deep for a year instead of wide.
- Travel somewhere that unsettles your assumptions.
- Write down what you actually believe, then live by one line of it.
Mean North Node in Sagittarius, 1950 to 2030: Apr 1955 to Oct 1956 · Nov 1973 to Jun 1975 · Jul 1992 to Jan 1994 · Feb 2011 to Sep 2012 · Sep 2029 to Apr 2031
North Node in Capricorn, South Node in Cancer
From the safety of home to a public role of your own.
Emotional fluency and care come naturally. You may be deeply tied to family and the past, quick to nurture, and happiest inside familiar walls. The pattern is retreat: letting moods make decisions, staying small to stay safe, or taking care of everyone at home as a way of avoiding the wider world.
Capricorn points toward responsibility, ambition, and a role in the world that's yours. The growth is learning to set long goals, keep commitments when you don't feel like it, and accept authority, including your own. Your Cancer warmth makes you the kind of leader people trust, as long as you're willing to lead.
Small ways to lean north:
- Set one five-year goal and break it into this month's step.
- Accept a role with your name and responsibility attached.
- Make one decision on principle rather than mood.
Mean North Node in Capricorn, 1950 to 2030: Sep 1953 to Apr 1955 · May 1972 to Nov 1973 · Dec 1990 to Jul 1992 · Jul 2009 to Feb 2011 · Mar 2028 to Sep 2029
North Node in Aquarius, South Node in Leo
From being the centre of attention to serving something larger.
Warmth and presence are your inheritance. You know how to shine, entertain, create, and love openly. The pattern is a need for applause: taking things personally, needing to be special, or measuring a day by how much you were noticed. It can make life feel like a stage you can never quite step off.
Aquarius asks you to widen the circle. Friendship, community, shared causes, the future, and being one valued voice among many. The growth is the relief of not having to be the hero of every story. Your Leo heart becomes what makes a group feel alive, generous rather than spotlight-seeking.
Small ways to lean north:
- Join something where you're a member, not the star.
- Champion someone else's work this month.
- Spend time with people unlike you, as an equal.
Mean North Node in Aquarius, 1950 to 2030: Mar 1952 to Sep 1953 · Oct 1970 to May 1972 · May 1989 to Dec 1990 · Jan 2008 to Jul 2009 · Aug 2026 to Mar 2028
North Node in Pisces, South Node in Virgo
From fixing every detail to trusting the flow.
You arrive capable, analytical, and useful. You notice what's wrong and know how to fix it, and you take your duties seriously. The pattern is worry and over-control: the endless list, the critic who never rests, health anxieties, and a sense that nothing is allowed until everything is perfect.
Pisces asks for surrender in its healthiest sense. Rest, imagination, compassion (for yourself first), art, spirituality, and accepting that not everything can or should be managed. The growth is learning that faith is a skill too. Your Virgo practicality is what keeps the dream connected to real life.
Small ways to lean north:
- Leave one day a week unscheduled on purpose.
- Make something with no goal of it being good.
- When you catch yourself fixing, ask whether anyone needs it fixed.

The nodes through the 12 houses
The sign is the style of the lesson; the house is where in life it plays out. Like the signs, the houses come in opposite pairs, so a North Node in the 3rd always means a South Node in the 9th. Houses need an accurate birth time.
1 North Node in the 1st house · self
South Node in the 7th: you know yourself through partners. Growth is building an identity, appearance, and direction that would hold up even if you were single.
2 North Node in the 2nd house · your own resources
South Node in the 8th: shared money, other people's crises, and intensity feel familiar. Growth is earning, owning, and valuing what is simply yours.
3 North Node in the 3rd house · everyday learning
South Node in the 9th: the grand theory and the far horizon. Growth is local: siblings, neighbours, short trips, writing, and listening more than lecturing.
4 North Node in the 4th house · home and roots
South Node in the 10th: career and reputation come easily. Growth is turning toward family, home, and an inner life that needs no audience.
5 North Node in the 5th house · creativity and joy
South Node in the 11th: groups and causes are safe ground. Growth is personal creative risk, romance, play, and sometimes children.
6 North Node in the 6th house · daily work and health
South Node in the 12th: retreat, dreaming, and escape. Growth is routine, useful work, care for the body, and showing up every day.
7 North Node in the 7th house · partnership
South Node in the 1st: self-reliance is the default. Growth comes through committed partnerships, contracts, and learning to share the wheel.
8 North Node in the 8th house · intimacy and shared life
South Node in the 2nd: comfort and possessions anchor you. Growth is merging: deep trust, shared resources, and letting change in.
9 North Node in the 9th house · meaning and travel
South Node in the 3rd: information and chatter. Growth is higher learning, travel, publishing, and a philosophy you'll stand behind.
10 North Node in the 10th house · public life and vocation
South Node in the 4th: family and the private world. Growth is stepping into a visible vocation and taking public responsibility.
11 North Node in the 11th house · community and the future
South Node in the 5th: personal expression and the spotlight. Growth is friendship, networks, collective goals, and long-range hopes.
12 North Node in the 12th house · rest and the unseen
South Node in the 6th: work, worry, and duty. Growth is solitude, spiritual practice, compassion, and permission to stop.
True node or mean node?
Look up your nodes in two different apps and you may see two slightly different degrees. That's because there are two ways to calculate them. The mean node is a smoothed average: it slides steadily backward through the zodiac at about three arcminutes a day, around 19 degrees a year. The true node is the actual crossing point at a given moment, which wobbles around the mean because the Sun's gravity keeps tugging on the Moon's orbit. Between 1950 and 2030 the two never drift more than about two degrees apart.
Most of the time they fall in the same sign. If you were born within a few weeks of a sign change, though, the true and mean node can land on opposite sides of the boundary, and that's often why two sources disagree. Astrologers are split on which to prefer. Many modern astrologers use the true node; others keep the mean node for its steadiness. Neither is wrong.
The finder on this page, and the ZodiacTales natal chart, use the true node. The date table further down uses the mean node, because its sign changes are clean single dates.
Why the nodes move backward
The nodes regress, which means they travel through the signs in reverse order: Aries, then Pisces, then Aquarius, and so on. The mean node always moves backward. The true node mostly does too, but for short stretches it can appear to stand still or even edge forward before resuming its backward drift. This is why the node is usually shown as retrograde in a chart, and why "North Node retrograde" in your chart isn't a special condition worth worrying about. It's simply how the nodes move.
The nodal cycle and your nodal returns
One full backward circuit of the zodiac takes about 18.6 years (roughly 6,798 days). So every 18 to 19 years the nodes come back to where they were when you were born. Astrologers call this the nodal return and read it as a year when questions of direction come back into focus: a new chapter, a course correction, a sense of being nudged back toward the North Node path.
Nodal returns fall around these ages:
- about 18.6
- about 37.2
- about 55.8
- about 74.4
- about 93.0
Halfway between returns comes the nodal reversal, when the transiting North Node sits on your natal South Node and vice versa. It's often described as a time when old habits feel especially tempting, or when you notice how far you've moved from them. Reversals fall around ages 9.3, 27.9, 46.5, 65.1, 83.7.
The nodes and eclipses
The nodes are also why eclipses happen when they do. A new Moon only becomes a solar eclipse when it falls close to one of the nodes, and a full Moon only becomes a lunar eclipse under the same condition. Because the Sun passes each node roughly once a year, eclipses arrive in "seasons" about every six months, and they fall in the signs the nodes are moving through. When the North Node was in Pisces in 2025, eclipses fell in Pisces and Virgo. As it moved toward Aquarius, the 2026 solar eclipses fell in Aquarius (February 17) and Leo (August 12).
Astrologers treat eclipses near your natal nodes, or near other personal points, as moments of change along the nodal axis. If an eclipse lands on your North Node, it's traditionally read as a push forward; on the South Node, as a release.
North Node sign dates, 1950 to 2030
These are the mean North Node periods, calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris. Dates are in Universal Time. If your birthday falls within about a month of a change, use the finder above, because the true node may sit in the neighbouring sign. Your South Node is the opposite sign, shown alongside.

How much did this sound like you?
The Lunar Nodes: common questions
What are the North Node and South Node?
They're the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path. They're always exactly opposite each other. In astrology the South Node describes familiar gifts and habits, and the North Node describes the direction of growth.
How do I find my North Node?
The nodes stay in each sign for about 18 to 19 months, so your birth date alone usually gives you the sign; the table above covers 1950 to 2030. For the house you need a birth time and place. The finder works out both, and your full natal chart includes a North and South Node reading too.
Why does another site show a different North Node sign?
Usually because one uses the true node and the other the mean node. They're within about two degrees of each other, so they only disagree for births near a sign change. This site's finder uses the true node.
Is the North Node my life purpose?
That's how it's often described. A gentler way to put it: the North Node shows the kind of growth the astrological tradition associates with deep satisfaction over time. It's a direction, not a destination you have to reach.
When is my nodal return?
About every 18.6 years: around ages 18 to 19, 37, 55 to 56, 74, and 93. Enter your birth details in the finder and your approximate return years will appear in the nodal cycle section.
What does it mean if a planet sits on my North Node?
A planet conjunct the North Node is traditionally read as a key tool for your growth, something worth developing. A planet conjunct the South Node is read as a well-worn talent you may rely on, or hide behind.
Keep exploring your chart
The nodes are one of several special points astrologers read alongside the planets.
