Year of the Fire Sheep 2027 丁未年

A Yin Fire stem over a Yin Earth branch: a softer, more settling year after the Fire Horse. Dates, meaning, Tai Sui, and what the tradition reads for each of the twelve signs.

The Year of the Fire Sheep (丁未年, Ding Wei Nian) begins with Lunar New Year on Saturday, February 6, 2027, and runs until January 25, 2028. Ding Wei is the 44th pair in the sixty-year cycle of stems and branches. It last arrived in 1967 and will next return in 2087.

Where 2026 paired a Yang Fire stem with the Horse, the most active Fire branch, 2027 pairs a Yin Fire stem with a Yin Earth branch. Practitioners describe the shift as moving from an open blaze to a lamp in a warm room. The heat is still present, but it is steadier, more inward, and more concerned with tending what already exists: homes, families, craft, and the people close by.

This guide covers the dates (including the two calendar conventions), what Ding Wei means in the traditional system, how the year differs from 2026 even though both share the same nayin element, how each sign relates to the year, the Ben Ming Nian for Sheep, and the year's directions and colors. Each sign also has its own page with month-by-month timing and readings by birth element.

When the Sheep Year Begins: Two Calendars, Two Answers

Chinese astrology keeps two clocks, and they give slightly different start dates for 2027. Most everyday use, such as working out someone's zodiac animal, follows the lunar calendar. Four Pillars (BaZi) charts follow the solar calendar.

The lunar year: February 6, 2027 to January 25, 2028. Lunar New Year falls on February 6, 2027. Anyone born from that day through January 25, 2028 is a Fire Sheep by the popular reckoning. Lunar New Year 2028 falls on January 26, which opens the Year of the Earth Monkey. The Lantern Festival, on the fifteenth day of the first month, falls on February 20, 2027.

The solar year: February 4, 2027 to February 3, 2028. BaZi practitioners begin the year at Li Chun 立春, the Start of Spring solar term, when the sun reaches 315 degrees of celestial longitude. In 2027 that moment falls at about 09:46 on February 4, Beijing time, which is 01:46 UTC. In the Americas the same instant still falls on the evening of February 3 by local clocks. Li Chun 2028 arrives on February 4, 2028.

The two conventions disagree only for people born between February 4 and February 5, 2027 (Sheep by BaZi, still Horse by the lunar calendar) and between January 26 and February 3, 2028 (Monkey by the lunar calendar, still Sheep by BaZi). Our Chinese New Year cutoff dates page lists the boundaries for every year, and the zodiac calculator handles them automatically.

The Lamp and the Late-Summer Field

Every year in the traditional calendar is a pair: one of ten Heavenly Stems over one of twelve Earthly Branches. Reading the pair is the starting point for every forecast on these pages.

The stem, Ding 丁, Yin Fire. Classical commentaries contrast Bing, the Yang Fire of the sun, with Ding, the Yin Fire of a candle, a lamp or a hearth. Ding light is small but precise. It warms what is near, it shows detail, and it refines metal rather than scorching it. Practitioners read Ding years as favoring attention, study, patient skill and warmth between people, more than grand gestures.

The branch, Wei 未, Yin Earth. Wei is the last month of summer, roughly July, when fields are ripening and the heat is still stored in the ground. It holds three hidden stems: Ji (Yin Earth) as its main qi, with Ding (Yin Fire) and Yi (Yin Wood) beneath. Wei is also one of the four storehouse branches, the storehouse of Wood, which is why the Sheep sits at the end of the Pig, Rabbit, Sheep Wood alliance.

Together. The Ding stem sits on its own root inside Wei, so the year's Fire is well supported, and Fire produces Earth, so the stem feeds the branch. Practitioners describe such a pillar as harmonious within itself: the year's energy flows downward into Earth rather than fighting itself. The overall tone is warm, dry and settling. People whose charts need Fire or Earth tend to find it easy going; people whose charts are already hot and dry are usually advised to look for Metal and Water to balance it.

Sheep or Goat? The character 羊 covers sheep, goats and rams alike, so English writers choose different words. ZodiacTales uses Sheep throughout; if you have seen 2027 called the Year of the Goat, it is the same sign and the same year.

Same River, Different Fire: How 2027 Differs from the Fire Horse

Bing Wu (2026) and Ding Wei (2027) are a nayin pair. In the traditional system each two consecutive pillars of the sixty share a nayin element, and for this pair it is Heavenly River Water, 天河水: rain falling from the sky, the image of water born out of summer heat. So the two years share an underlying tone, but on the surface they behave very differently.

The Horse and Sheep combine. Wu and Wei are a Six Harmony pair, 午未合, the pair that sits at the height of summer on the zodiac wheel. Practitioners often read the two years as one movement in two halves: 2026 lights things up, 2027 gives them a place to settle. Projects, relationships and changes that began in the Horse year tend to find their form in the Sheep year.

The summer meeting completes. Snake, Horse and Sheep together form the southern Fire seasonal meeting, 巳午未. With the Wood Snake year of 2025, the Fire Horse of 2026 and the Fire Sheep of 2027, three consecutive years have walked through that meeting. Practitioners read 2027 as the closing third of a long, Fire-heavy stretch, and 2028, an Earth Monkey year, as the turn toward Metal and autumn.

How Each Sign Meets the Sheep Year

Traditional yearly forecasts start with one question: how does your birth-year branch relate to the year's branch, Wei? The twelve signs fall into three loose groups. These are broad tendencies drawn from your year of birth only; a full chart can soften or strengthen them considerably.

Signs that meet Tai Sui directly

  • Sheep, Ben Ming Nian. The year of your own sign. Read as a year of heightened visibility and self-reckoning more than misfortune, traditionally met with red worn close to the body.
  • Ox, clash and punishment. Ox sits directly opposite Sheep. An Earth-on-Earth clash, read as the year that moves and re-sorts what was settled, especially home and property.
  • Dog, punishment and break. Dog and Sheep share the Ox, Dog, Sheep punishment trio and also form a Break. Read as friction over fairness and broken arrangements, best met with clear agreements.
  • Rat, harm. One of the six Harm pairs. The gentlest of the four, usually read as misunderstandings and quiet drains rather than open conflict.

Signs in harmony with the year

  • Horse, Six Harmony. The Sheep's closest partner. After its own Ben Ming year in 2026, the Horse is read as finding support and recovery in 2027.
  • Rabbit, Three Harmony. The center of the Pig, Rabbit, Sheep Wood alliance, with Sheep as its storehouse. Read as a year to gather and keep what you have grown.
  • Pig, Three Harmony. The opening branch of the same Wood alliance. Read as a cooperative, sociable year, with Pig's Water helping to temper the year's Fire.

Signs read through the Five Elements

  • Tiger, Wood. Tiger Wood feeds the year's Fire and presses on its Earth. Read as productive and expressive, with a need to protect your own reserves.
  • Dragon, Earth. The same element as the Sheep branch, and a fellow storehouse. Read as a year of shared ground: steady, cooperative, a little crowded.
  • Snake, Fire. The same element as the stem and part of the summer meeting with Horse and Sheep. Read as warm and well supported, with a reminder not to overheat.
  • Monkey, Metal. Pressured by Ding Fire, fed by Wei Earth. Read as a year of testing and refinement, and the eve of the Monkey's own year in 2028.
  • Rooster, Yin Metal. Ding Fire is the classic forge for Yin Metal. Read as a year of polish, standards and craft, with Earth support underneath.

A Note for Sheep: The Year of Your Own Sign

People born in Sheep years (1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015) meet their own branch as Tai Sui in 2027. This is Ben Ming Nian, 本命年, also described as 值太岁, the year of "holding" Tai Sui. It comes every twelve years, and in popular belief it is a year of change, visibility and some unpredictability rather than a year of bad luck.

The best-known custom is wearing red, often red underwear, a red string or a red bracelet, ideally given as a gift by someone close to you. Many families also visit a temple early in the lunar year to pay respects to the year's Tai Sui. Sheep born in 1967 have an additional milestone: Ding Wei is their exact birth pillar, so 2027 completes their first full sixty-year cycle, a return traditionally honored as a significant birthday.

The Sheep 2027 page goes through the year in detail, and our Ben Ming Nian guide explains the custom for every sign.

Tai Sui, the Year Breaker and the 2027 Feng Shui Map

In classical feng shui, Tai Sui 太岁 is the year's presiding influence, located at the compass position of the year's branch. For a Wei year that is the southwest.

  • Tai Sui: southwest, in the Wei mountain of the 24-direction compass, roughly 202.5 to 217.5 degrees. Traditional practice avoids starting major renovation, demolition or digging in this sector during the year, and avoids sitting with your back to it for important negotiations.
  • Year Breaker 岁破: northeast, directly opposite in the Chou mountain, roughly 22.5 to 37.5 degrees. Facing or disturbing this sector is traditionally treated with the same caution.
  • Five Yellow 五黄: north. In the 2027 annual flying star chart, with the 9 Purple star at the center, the Five Yellow falls in the north, the sector feng shui practitioners usually keep quietest.
  • Three Killings 三煞: west. For years in the Pig, Rabbit, Sheep frame the Three Killings sit in the west. The traditional advice is not to have your back to it and not to break ground there.

These are traditional guidelines for timing building work, not rules for daily life. Many households use them only when planning a renovation, and a practitioner reading a specific home would take its own layout into account.

Colors for a Fire and Earth Year

Popular lists often give one set of lucky colors for a year. The traditional approach is more personal: a color helps if it carries an element your own chart is short of. Because Ding Wei is warm and Earthy, the year itself already supplies plenty of red, orange, yellow and brown.

  • Metal tones, white, silver and gold, are often suggested for people whose charts are already heavy in Earth, since Metal gently draws off Earth. They are a common recommendation for Ox, Dragon and Dog in 2027.
  • Water tones, black, navy and deep blue, cool Fire and are often suggested for people whose charts are already hot, including many Snakes and Horses.
  • Green Wood tones sit with the Sheep's Wood alliance and suit Rabbits and Pigs, though Wood also feeds the year's Fire, so practitioners use them with some care for people who run hot.
  • Red and yellow remain the colors of celebration at Lunar New Year whatever your sign, and red is the customary color for Sheep in their Ben Ming Nian.

Each sign page gives a color reading specific to that sign. If you know your full chart, your Day Master and its balance are a better guide than your year animal.

Questions About the Year of the Fire Sheep

When does the Year of the Sheep 2027 start and end?

The Year of the Fire Sheep begins on Lunar New Year, Saturday, February 6, 2027, and ends on January 25, 2028, the day before the 2028 Lunar New Year (January 26, 2028). BaZi practitioners use the solar boundary instead: Li Chun, which falls on February 4, 2027 at about 09:46 Beijing time, through February 3, 2028.

What element is 2027 in Chinese astrology?

2027 is a Ding Wei year. Ding is Yin Fire, the Heavenly Stem, and Wei is the Sheep, a Yin Earth branch, so the year is called the Fire Sheep. Its nayin, the traditional sound element of the full pillar, is Heavenly River Water, which it shares with the 2026 Fire Horse year.

Is 2027 the Year of the Sheep or the Year of the Goat?

Both names are used. The Chinese character 羊 (yang) covers sheep, goats and rams, so English sources translate it differently. ZodiacTales uses Sheep throughout. If you have seen 2027 called the Year of the Goat, it is the same sign and the same year.

Which signs clash with Tai Sui in 2027?

In the traditional system four signs are said to offend Tai Sui in a Sheep year: the Sheep itself (Ben Ming Nian, the year of one's own sign), the Ox (direct clash), the Dog (punishment and break) and the Rat (harm). Horse, Rabbit and Pig have harmony ties with the Sheep branch.

What are the lucky colors for 2027?

There is no single lucky color for everyone. The Ding Wei year is heavy in Fire and Earth, so practitioners usually suggest colors that balance your own chart: Metal whites and golds for people who need Earth drained, Water blues and blacks for those who need cooling, and warm reds and yellows for those whose charts lack Fire or Earth. The sign pages give a reading for each animal.

Where is Tai Sui in 2027?

Tai Sui sits in the southwest in 2027, in the Wei mountain of the 24-direction compass, roughly 202.5 to 217.5 degrees. The Year Breaker sits opposite in the northeast, roughly 22.5 to 37.5 degrees. Traditional feng shui avoids starting major renovation in those sectors during the year.

Everything on these pages describes traditional Chinese astrology and feng shui as practitioners read them. It is offered for reflection and cultural interest, not as prediction, financial or medical advice.
